Dos and don'ts in making a game...

In some of my other posts I've been complaining about what others have done wrong in their games and what they should have done to improve them instead... Now I'm going to try and give you an idea, in general, of what you should do to be sure that your game will be successful.

Normally, people that decide to make a game, think about it because it seems they can't find a specific feature that appears to be missing in the games they play... At least that is what happens to me. When I play games there's always something that I wish that was a little bit different or that I feel that is missing in the game, of course, with the exception of some...

One thing you should have in mind is that the more complex the game is, the more complex you'll want to make it. What I mean is that you might start with a simple idea of making a FPS or adventure game but with time you'll find always something to add or upgrade in your game. So try to restrict your game as much as you can unless, of course, your goal is doing the exact opposite.

But anyways if your thinking about selling your game you need to have severall things in consideration...

First of all, decide what your game will be... RPG, FPS, simulation, etc. Do NOT make a game that will put all of this things together because it is really hard and only experience people would manage to make it work. But if you want to try it, you can of course; but I just want to tell you that you’ll probably end up pulling your hair of your head...

Anyways, if you have already came up with an idea, you should write it down and see to whom the game would interest. Basically set  and get to know your target audience.

Choose the platforms where the game will run and which programs are the more appropriate for such and be sure your game will be enjoyable on those platforms. Do NOT choose every single platform just because it could bring more money...

Then decide the basic look your game should have. Try to picture, in your head, yourself playing and you should get an idea, it is really not that hard. Besides that, it is important that you try to draw (artwork) just so you have something to hold on too, because the look you thought about today might not be the same tomorrow... And, if by any chance, you decide to do something different, you still have the first drawings as a base for future work. Like that, you just have to change small details.

After, the practice would tell you which program is better but if you're inexperienced then just look up some software online and some forums where they talk about which is better and why. And by software I mean the type of coding, 3D programs and game engine that would be enough for you game to run smoothly and without problems. Also, be careful in choosing this because every program might have some features that are better and others that are worse comparing to another. See which are the ones that will make your game a better experience for the user, not only in terms of looks but also of playing.

Tips:
Always have in consideration the performance of your game. Look for ways to optimize it.
Save your textures as PNG’s (Lossless format).
Check my tutorials to know more hehe…

After that, it is really up to you and up to the effort you put into your project.

Good luck...
